Trump Revives ‘Department of War’ in Controversial Pentagon Rebrand

US President Donald Trump

Washington, September 6(HS): Donald Trump has signed an executive order rebranding the Pentagon from the Department of Defense to the Department of War, resurrecting the agency’s historic title last used in 1947. The move, announced on Friday, marks a symbolic but politically charged shift in America’s military identity, with the old name now serving as an official secondary title.

The White House said the president acted unilaterally through executive authority, thereby sidestepping Congress, which would be required to approve any permanent renaming of a federal agency. Almost immediately, the Pentagon’s official web portal redirected from defense.gov to war.gov, underscoring the administration’s embrace of the terminology.

Flanked by senior military officials, Trump justified the change with sweeping rhetoric: “We won the first world war, we won the second world war, we won everything before that and in between. And then we decided to go woke and we changed the name to the Department of Defense.”

Military Power and Legal Controversies

The rebrand comes amid escalating military operations in the Caribbean. Earlier this week, a U.S. Navy airstrike on a small vessel killed 11 people in international waters. The Pentagon described the target as a drug-running boat linked to Venezuela’s Tren de Aragua crime syndicate, though legal experts have questioned whether the strike violated international law.

In a dramatic show of force, seven U.S. warships and a nuclear-powered submarine are now reportedly en route to the region. Trump has also authorized the deployment of stealth fighters to Puerto Rico, asserting his administration will confront cartel activity “with strength, not weakness.”

From “Defense” to “War”

Critics note the rebrand collides with Trump’s oft-repeated campaign mantra as the “anti-war president.” Yet the president argued that the old name better reflects the military’s “true mission,” insisting on offense over defense.

His defense secretary, Pete Hegseth, echoed the sentiment in stark terms: “We’re going to go on offense, not just defense. Maximum lethality, not tepid legality. This is America’s War Department once again.”

Legislation to cement the renaming has already been introduced by Republican allies in Congress, though its fate remains uncertain. For now, Trump has secured the optics — if not the permanence — of returning America’s Pentagon to a wartime identity.
