Washington, July 25 (HS): US President Donald J. Trump signed an executive order focused on federal rules governing name, image, and likeness related to college sports, driven by concerns over unfair competition due to uncontrolled spending and state laws. The order aims to protect scholarships and support for women’s and non-revenue sports, banning payments to athletes from third parties while allowing advertising for branding.
Departments with revenues over $125 million must increase scholarships for women’s and non-revenue sports; those earning between $50 million and $125 million must maintain current levels, and departments under $50 million cannot reduce opportunities in non-revenue sports.
Trump emphasized college sports’ significance to the economy and community culture, advocating for greater respect and benefits for all college athletes, paralleling their contributions to family and recreation. He cited the success of the U.S. Olympic team and the correlation between participation in sports and future achievements in various fields, highlighting that many influential women in corporate America have athletic backgrounds.
The executive order also responds to recent legal challenges, reinforcing protections for college sports, with expected impacts beginning in the 2025-2026 athletic season. The administration’s commitment aims to ensure a balanced competitive landscape while nurturing the development of future leaders through collegiate athletics.
