Trump Slaps New Tariffs on Pharmaceuticals, Trucks and Cabinets

U.S. President Donald Trump

Washington, Sept 26(HS): U.S. President Donald Trump announced a fresh round of tariffs on Thursday, expanding his protectionist trade agenda with sweeping new levies on key industries ranging from pharmaceuticals to heavy machinery and furniture.Under the measures, branded pharmaceutical imports will face a 100% tariff unless manufacturers commit to building production facilities in the United States. Imports of heavy-duty trucks will be hit with a 25% tariff, while kitchen and bathroom cabinets will face a 50% levy.

Beginning next week, upholstered furniture imports will be taxed at 30%, the president said in a statement on his Truth Social platform.“These tariffs are necessary to stop the large-scale flooding of our market by foreign producers,” Trump wrote, arguing the duties would shield American firms such as Peterbilt and Mack Trucks from “unfair outside competition.”

The new duties come despite warnings from U.S. businesses and industry groups. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has cautioned that tariffs could drive up production costs, since essential truck components are overwhelmingly sourced from countries including Mexico, Canada, Germany, Finland and Japan. Mexico and Canada alone provided more than half of U.S. imports in heavy-duty truck parts last year.

The chamber described it as “impractical” to expect domestic industries to fully substitute those foreign supplies, predicting higher costs for manufacturers and consumers.Expanding Tariff StrategyThursday’s announcement follows Trump’s broader tariff package launched in August, targeting imports from more than 90 countries in pursuit of job creation, reshoring, and political leverage.

Despite concerns over price hikes and strained ties with allies, Trump has insisted the moves are essential to protect U.S. industry.“These firms will be protected from the onslaught of outside interruptions,” he wrote, casting the tariffs as a shield for American workers.
