Trump Talks Trade with India: Lower Tariffs Expected, Reciprocal Rates on the Horizon

Delhi/New York, 21 March (H.S.): US President Donald Trump has been vocal about his expectations for India to lower its tariffs, but has also stated his plans to charge a reciprocal rate. In an interview published on Thursday, he expressed belief that India would reduce tariffs, but reiterated his decision to impose equal tariffs on April 2nd. Trump acknowledged having a positive relationship with India, but criticized them as one of the highest tariffing nations in the world. He also mentioned the proposed India-Middle East-Europe-Economic Corridor (IMEC), which aims to connect India to Italy through land and sea routes.

This project has gained support from several nations, including the US, and was reinforced during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to the White House. Despite criticism from Trump, India has taken steps to reduce tariffs on luxury cars and high-end motorcycles in response.

A recent visit by Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal to Washington aimed to prevent further tariff hikes as both countries continue negotiations on trade issues.

The US is particularly pushing for India to lower its tariffs, and while progress has been made, it remains to be seen how this issue will ultimately be resolved between the two nations.
