Trump’s Armenia-Albania Blunder Sparks Laughter at European Summit

European Leaders Mock Trump Over Armenia-Albania Mix-Up

Copenhagen, October 3(HS): A diplomatic gaffe by US President Donald Trump turned into a source of amusement among European leaders at the European Political Community summit in Copenhagen on Thursday.

During discussions, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama drew laughter by joking with French President Emmanuel Macron and Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev. Rama quipped that Albania deserved congratulations for the peace deal Trump had claimed to broker between Albania and Azerbaijan. Aliyev burst into laughter, while Macron replied with a lighthearted apology, fueling the mockery.

The humor stemmed from Trump’s frequent confusion between Armenia and Albania when touting his foreign policy achievements. In a recent television appearance, Trump boasted about resolving conflicts between Azerbaijan and Albania that had “lasted for many years,” while in reality, the US-brokered peace agreement in August was between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Trump also stumbled during a joint address with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, where he mispronounced “Azerbaijan” and again paired it with Albania, further fueling ridicule.Beyond the misstatements, Trump has repeatedly exaggerated his role in global peace efforts, claiming credit for ending seven wars after returning to office. His list includes Serbia and Kosovo, and even Egypt and Ethiopia, despite no active wars between them.

Fact-checkers have dismissed these claims, while India openly rejected US assertions of Trump easing tensions with Pakistan earlier this year. The U.S. leader’s history of geographical blunders has provided further ammunition to critics. In 2023, he mistakenly referred to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán as “the leader of Turkey” and wrongly suggested Hungary bordered Russia.

More recently, before meeting President Vladimir Putin, Trump declared he was “going to Russia,” only for the summit to be held in Alaska.Trump’s missteps have once again raised questions about his diplomatic credibility, even as he continues to push his case for recognition, including with talk of a Nobel Peace Prize.
