UN 'Horrified' as Deadly Rio Drug Raid Claims Over 60 Lives

RIO DE JANEIRO, 29 October (H.S.): The United Nations human rights office declared on Tuesday it was horrified by a massive police operation in Rio de Janeiro that has left at least 64 people dead, including four police officers. The raid, which involved up to 2,500 heavily armed officers, targeted Brazil’s primary drug-trafficking organization in two northern favelas.

In a statement posted on the social media platform X, the UN agency condemned the extreme lethal consequences of the operation, which it said continues a disturbing trend of deadly police actions in Brazil’s marginalized communities. The organization has called for prompt and effective investigations and reminded Brazilian authorities of their obligations under international human rights law.

Major police operations are a frequent occurrence in the impoverished and densely populated favelas of Rio de Janeiro, many of which are under the control of powerful criminal gangs. This latest raid stands as one of the deadliest in the city’s recent history, drawing sharp international criticism over the use of lethal force.
