New Delhi, April 7 (H.S.): A demand for immediate hearing on petitions filed against amendments to the Waqf Law has been made in the Supreme Court. Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, representing the Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, requested for an expedited hearing on the petitions against the Waqf Amendment Act before a bench headed by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna on Monday. The Chief Justice responded by stating that an arrangement for urgent hearings is in place and that there was no need to raise the request here. He added that he would decide on the hearing after reviewing these requests in the afternoon. So far, around a dozen petitions have been filed.
In this matter, Delhi’s Aam Aadmi Party MLA Amanatullah Khan, Congress Party MP Mohammad Javed, and AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi, among several other petitioners, have filed petitions. The petitions state that the amendment to the Waqf Law infringes upon the religious and cultural autonomy of Muslims. They argue that the Waqf Amendment Act undermines the rights of minorities to manage the religious and charitable institutions of Muslims. The petitions describe this amendment as discriminatory against the Muslim community.
The Congress MP’s petition states that this change violates the constitutional rights of the Muslim community. It mentions that the Waqf Amendment Act arbitrarily imposes restrictions on the management of Waqf properties and weakens the religious autonomy of the Muslim community. Owaisi’s petition claims that the Waqf Amendment Act violates the fundamental rights of Muslims.
