US Top Court rejects Tahawwur Rana’s extradition stay plea

Mumbai attack accused Tahawwur Rana

Washington, March 7 (HS): The way has been cleared for Mumbai terror attack accused Tahawwur Rana’s extradition to India. The US Supreme Court has rejected his plea to stay the extradition to India.

Tahawwur had appealed to the US Supreme Court to not be extradited to India. He had sought an emergency stay and said that he could be tortured if sent to India. He is a Muslim and of Pakistani origin, so he is in greater danger. He had also cited his poor health and sought a stay on his extradition.

Pakistani-origin Canadian citizen Tahawwur Rana (64) has been kept at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles. He is close to Pakistani-American terrorist David Coleman Headley, one of the main conspirators of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack. In the US, he was convicted of working for the terrorist organization Lashkar-e-Taiba and India had been demanding his extradition for a long time. Last month, in a press conference with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the White House, US President Donald Trump announced that Tahawwur Rana would be sent to India and he would go to India and face justice.

Earlier in January, the US Supreme Court approved the extradition of Tahawwur Rana, as the court rejected his review petition in the case.

On 26 November 2008, 10 Pakistani terrorists killed 166 innocent people in an attack that lasted for about 60 hours in Mumbai. After the attack, terrorist Ajmal Kasab was caught alive. In November 2012, Kasab was hanged in Pune’s Yerwada Jail.
