Chennai, 17 April (H.S.) : Actor Vijay, leader of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party, has reportedly claimed credit for the Supreme Court’s recent order staying certain provisions of the Waqf Amendment Act, 2013. This claim comes shortly after the apex court issued an interim stay on specific sections of the Act, which deals with the management of Waqf properties.
Sources within the TVK have indicated that Vijay’s persistent advocacy and the party’s efforts in highlighting the potential issues with the amended Act played a significant role in prompting the Supreme Court to take cognizance of the matter. The party had earlier voiced concerns regarding the broad powers granted to the Waqf Board and the potential for misuse.
Following the Supreme Court’s order, Vijay reportedly issued a statement expressing satisfaction with the outcome, stating that it vindicated the party’s stand on the issue. He is said to have lauded the judiciary for upholding the rights of various stakeholders and ensuring a fair review of the legislation.
However, it is important to note that the Supreme Court’s decision is an interim order, and the legal challenge to the Waqf Amendment Act is still pending. While Vijay and the TVK are attributing the stay to their efforts, the court’s decision is typically based on legal arguments presented by petitioners and an assessment of the merits of the case. The extent of the TVK’s direct influence on the judicial process remains a subject of speculation.
