Villagers Clash with Police to Prevent Arrest of Former TMC Panchayat Member in West Bengal

Kolkata, 1 March (H.S.) – A tense confrontation erupted in Uttar Dinajpur’s Chopra area when villagers clashed with the police, attempting to prevent the arrest of a former Trinamool Congress (TMC) panchayat member. Several police personnel sustained injuries during the altercation.

According to police officials, a team had arrived in Goalpokhar to apprehend Mujibur Rahman, who was wanted in multiple cases under the Arms Act. However, as soon as Rahman was taken into custody, a group of villagers allegedly tried to block the police from taking him away and even attempted to free him from their grip. The scuffle resulted in injuries to some officers.

In connection with the incident, police have arrested 11 individuals.

Meanwhile, local TMC MLA Hamidul Rahman has strongly criticized the police action, claiming that Mujibur Rahman is innocent and that law enforcement officers attempted to detain him without a valid warrant.

Some locals told me that he has never been involved in any criminal activities. He is a former gram panchayat member. The police entered his house, vandalized property, and this led to the conflict, the MLA stated in an interview with a vernacular news channel.
