Delhi, 20 July (H.S.): The World Championship of Legends (WCL) cancelled the India vs Pakistan match originally set for today(July 20) at Edgbaston after several Indian cricket legends opted out. The WCL had announced the fixture in hopes of creating joyful memories for fans following a recent volleyball match between the two nations. However, the decision led to unintended emotional distress for many Indian legends, prompting the cancellation.
The WCL issued an apology, stating, We unintentionally caused discomfort to our Indian Cricket Legends, and emphasized their intention to provide enjoyable moments for fans.
The cancellation also comes in the context of heightened tensions following the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, which influenced the decisions of legends such as Harbhajan Singh, Suresh Raina, and Yusuf Pathan to withdraw. Shikhar Dhawan confirmed via social media that he too would not participate, referencing the current geopolitical climate as a factor for his decision.
Citing a desire to celebrate multicultural sports, the WCL acknowledged that their intentions may have missed the mark, inciting more discomfort than excitement among players and the community. This match was especially significant as it would have marked the first cricket encounter between India and Pakistan since increasing military tensions between the nations. In conclusion, the WCL expressed regret for any hurt feelings caused and reiterated their aim of fostering positive experiences for cricket fans.
