Has winter left your skin dry and scaly?
With constant shifts between indoor heating and freezing outdoor temperatures, it takes only a few days for skin to turn dry, dull, and rough.
Dryness and irritation are common winter skin woes, but while the season is unavoidable, damaged skin doesn’t have to be. With the right care, you can prevent your skin from falling victim to harsh winter conditions.
Creating a hydrating body scrub at home doesn’t need to be complicated. Gentle ingredients, light pressure, and patience matter far more than harsh exfoliation. When done correctly, scrubbing leaves the skin softer, less itchy, and far more comfortable—exactly what winter skincare should aim for.
Instead of reaching for expensive exfoliators, pamper your skin from head to toe with these simple, do-it-yourself scrubs that work wonders at home.
1. Honey and Sugar Scrub
Honey and sugar are a winning combination for healthy, glowing skin. These warm, soothing ingredients are especially beneficial during winter months.
Honey is a natural humectant that helps remove dead skin cells while improving circulation, while sugar gently exfoliates. Together, they create an effective yet nourishing scrub.
Recipe:
Mix ¼ cup raw honey, ½ cup granulated white sugar, ¼ cup sweet almond oil, 1 teaspoon vitamin E oil (optional), and 10 drops of lavender oil in a glass jar. Tighten the lid and store properly. For best results, use within one month.
2. Besan and Turmeric Scrub
Besan (gram flour) is a popular natural ingredient used in traditional skincare to promote healthy, glowing skin. It helps brighten the complexion and improve texture.
Turmeric (haldi) is a powerful antioxidant with antibacterial properties, making this scrub particularly beneficial for those dealing with pimples or acne.
Recipe 1:
Combine 2 tablespoons of besan with ½ teaspoon of turmeric. Add enough milk or yoghurt to form a smooth paste. Apply, gently scrub, and rinse with water.
Recipe 2:
Mix 1 tablespoon besan, 1 tablespoon turmeric, 1 teaspoon lemon juice, and 1 teaspoon raw honey. Apply evenly to the face, leave on for 10 minutes, then rinse with warm water.
3. Oatmeal and Sugar Scrub
An oatmeal and sugar scrub is ideal for dry winter skin. Oats provide gentle exfoliation, while sugar adds a slightly deeper texture to combat dryness.
Recipe:
Take 1 cup oatmeal, 1 tablespoon brown or white sugar, 1 teaspoon olive, coconut, or sweet almond oil, 2 tablespoons milk, and the white of one egg. Mix all ingredients in a bowl and apply to the face and neck using circular motions.
Alternatively, blend oatmeal and sugar into a coarse powder, mix with water to form a paste, gently massage onto the skin, and rinse off.
4. Almond and Honey Scrub (Ideal for Oily Skin in Winter)
Almonds protect the skin from free radical damage and environmental stress, while argan oil helps repair the skin barrier and boost moisture levels.
Recipe 1:
Grind 4 tablespoons of almonds into a fine powder. Add 1 tablespoon of honey and a few drops of argan oil to form a paste. Store in a glass jar in the refrigerator.
Apply to damp skin using gentle circular motions, rinse with normal water, and use once a week.
Recipe 2:
Mix 2 tablespoons fine almond powder, 2 tablespoons yogurt, 2 teaspoons honey, and a pinch of ground clove. Apply to a damp face, gently massage for a few minutes, and rinse with cold water.
Recipe 3:
Combine 3 tablespoons powdered almonds, 3 teaspoons honey, and 3 tablespoons orange flower water. Apply immediately without massaging. Let it dry for 10–15 minutes, then gently scrub with fingertips in small circular motions. Rinse with warm water.
How to Use Scrubs Correctly in Winter
- Always use scrubs on damp skin. A lukewarm shower helps soften the skin and makes exfoliation gentler.
- Take a small amount and massage lightly—no pressure. If the skin turns red, you are overdoing it.
- Focus on rough areas like elbows, knees, and legs.
- Rinse with lukewarm water, never hot.
- Apply moisturizer while the skin is still slightly damp to lock in hydration.
- Exfoliate once a week for most skin types. If your skin tolerates it well, twice a week is sufficient.
- Avoid daily exfoliation, harsh scrubbing, and hot water, as these can worsen dryness.
With gentle care and simple ingredients, your skin can stay soft, nourished, and comfortable all winter long.
