With our batting lineup we can chase anything, says Josh Tongue

England's fast bowler Josh Tongue

Leeds, June 24 (H.S.): England’s fast bowler Josh Tongue proclaimed that the team is focused on victory as they head into the final day of the Leeds Test against India, needing to chase down a daunting target of 371 runs. At the end of the fourth day, England’s openers had scored 21 runs without losing a wicket. Under captain Ben Stokes, England has only drawn one out of their last 36 Tests. Although weather conditions could affect play, Tongue expressed confidence in the team’s efforts if they are allowed a full day of cricket, stating the intent to play positively and withstand pressure from the Indian bowlers.

After Tongue’s comments, Indian batsman KL Rahul acknowledged that the outcome of the match is clear, noting England’s aggressive approach increases India’s chances to secure ten wickets. Rahul, who has scored 137 runs in this match, highlighted the pitch’s unease, predicting further deterioration on the fifth day. He expressed that although he felt set while batting, the conditions have caused uneven bounce.

Rahul also defended India’s lower-order batting failures, citing their inability to capitalize on runs after losing 7 wickets for 41 runs in the first innings and 6 wickets for 31 runs in the second. He mentioned that the team had aimed for a secure run total but could have added another 40-50 runs. He emphasized that the lower order is integral to the team and that all players are working hard, despite the frustrations of not performing on the field.

The team’s initial goal this series was to score 350-400 runs each innings, which they have achieved, leading to optimism that with more batters finding their rhythm, scores could increase to 450 or 500. India leads the contest, but the outcome remains uncertain as the final day’s play unfolds.
