Delhi, 23 October (H.S.): World Athletics officially announced on Thursday its ratification of four new world records, including Mondo Duplantis’ latest pole vault masterpiece and three remarkable world under-20 records set earlier this year.
Swedish superstar Mondo Duplantis soared to new heights at the World Athletics Championships 2025 in Tokyo, clearing 6.30 meters to break his own world record. This performance on August 12 added a centimeter to his previous mark of 6.29m, set in Budapest. The achievement marked his 14th career world record and secured his third consecutive world championship title.
It’s better than I could have imagined, Duplantis said. To break the world record in front of this amazing crowd is incredible.
The competition was notably deep, with seven athletes clearing 5.90m for the first time in history. In the junior ranks, Chinese athletes Zhang Jiale and Yan Ziyi established new world U20 records in August at the Chinese Championships in Quzhou.
On August 2, 18-year-old Zhang Jiale launched the hammer to a distance of 77.24 meters, shattering the previous world U20 record of 73.43m held by Finland’s Silja Kosonen since 2021. Zhang later won a bronze medal at the World Championships in Tokyo with a throw of 77.10m.
The following day, on August 3, 17-year-old Yan Ziyi set a new world U20 javelin record with a massive throw of 65.89 meters, surpassing her own previous bests.Poland’s Hubert Troszcianka made history in the men’s U20 decathlon at the European U20 Championships in Tampere, Finland.
On August 8, he amassed a world record total of 8514 points, breaking the previous record of 8435 points set by Germany’s Niklas Kaul in 2017. Troszcianka became the first U20 athlete in history to surpass the 8500-point barrier, with standout performances including a 46.21-second 400m and a 68.87m javelin throw.
The official recognition of these four exceptional performances cements the 2025 season as a memorable chapter in athletics history.
