Three killed, 18 injured in the 1991 blast at Jammu Railway Station
Jammu, August 13 (KINS): Government Railway Police (GRP) Jammu has arrested an absconding accused in connection with the 1991 Jammu Railway Station bomb blast case, nearly 35 years after the incident.
The accused, identified as Altaf Hussain Sheikh, son of Nazir Ahmed Sheikh, a resident of Marhama-Bijbehara in Anantnag, was booked under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA). Police said he had initially gone underground and later lived for several decades under a concealed identity.
According to police, the accused, along with his accomplices, was allegedly involved in the bomb blast that took place on April 2, 1991, at Platform No. 1 of Jammu Railway Station. The blast claimed the lives of three persons, including two members of the paramilitary forces, while 18 civilians were injured.
In connection with the incident, FIR No. 07/1991 was registered at Police Station GRP Jammu under Sections 307, 302 and 120-B of the RPC, Sections 3/4 of TADA and Sections 4/5 of the Explosive Substances Act.
During the investigation, one accused, identified as Aman Ullah Khan, was arrested, while three other accused managed to evade arrest and were subsequently declared absconders by the concerned court.
Police said that over the past two years, GRP Jammu intensified efforts to trace the absconding accused. Following extensive investigation and verification of identity and residential details, the police team traced Altaf Hussain Sheikh, who was allegedly living under a concealed identity and had established himself as a businessman in the Bijbehara area.
After a prolonged pursuit, the accused was arrested and produced before the TADA Court on August 13, 2026, for further legal proceedings.
Police said the arrest marks a significant development in the long-pending case and demonstrates its continued efforts to bring absconders involved in serious crimes to justice.(KINS)
