Dhaka, April 30 (H.S.): The High Court has scheduled the verdict for the death references and appeals in the 2001 Ramna Batamul carnage case for 8 May. A bench consisting of Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice Nasreen Akter announced this date following the conclusion of hearings on 18 February.
On 14 April 2001, two bombs detonated during Pahela Baishakh celebrations at Ramna Batamul, resulting in 10 fatalities and numerous injuries. On 23 June 2014, a Dhaka court sentenced several individuals, including Mufti Abdul Hannan, to death for their involvement in the attacks.
Others received life sentences. The convicted are linked to the Islamist group Harkat-ul-Jihad al-Islami. Mufti Abdul Hannan, notorious for orchestrating terrorist acts, was executed on April 13, 2017, for a grenade attack on the then British high commissioner in 2004. Some accused in these cases remain at large.
