WASHINGTON, 22 October (H.S.): President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that the United States will proceed with imposing a 155 percent tariff on Chinese goods beginning November 1. The decision marks a significant intensification of Washington’s secondary tariff strategy, aimed at nations perceived to be indirectly bolstering Russia’s wartime economy.
While expressing a personal desire for amicable relations with Beijing, President Trump asserted that years of one-sided economic dealings necessitated firm action.
I want to be nice to China. But China has been very rough with us over the years because we had presidents that weren’t smart from a business standpoint, he remarked.
This move follows a similar 50 percent tariff levied against India for its importation of Russian oil, extending the administration’s policy to China, the world’s largest importer of Russian crude.
The President stated the immediate catalyst for the tariff was what he described as an extremely hostile letter from China outlining its own plans for large-scale export controls.
In a subsequent post on his Truth Social platform, Trump detailed that the new measures would include an additional 100 percent tariff over and above any tariff that they are currently paying and the implementation of export controls on all critical software.
President Trump defended his long-standing use of tariffs as a crucial tool for national security and a lever for negotiating favorable trade deals, citing past agreements with the European Union, Japan, and South Korea as successful applications of this strategy. He added that the substantial revenue from these tariffs would be directed toward paying down the national debt.
