MUSCAT, 27 October (H.S.): The Indian senior men’s rugby sevens team secured a historic silver medal at the Asia Rugby Emirates Sevens Trophy 2025 on Sunday night, earning a coveted promotion to Asia’s top-tier competition.
Despite a 27-0 loss to top-seeded Kazakhstan in the final, India’s remarkable run through the tournament ensures their place in the Asia Rugby Emirates Sevens Series. Coached by former England star Ben Gollings, the team displayed exceptional discipline and skill. Their campaign included a comeback 14-10 win over Lebanon, a 26-5 victory against Afghanistan, a 21-7 quarterfinal win over Iran, and a commanding 17-0 shutout of Saudi Arabia in the semifinals.
I am extremely proud of this team, said Coach Gollings. In a very short time, the players have shown amazing dedication, focus, and teamwork. This achievement is a significant step for Indian rugby. The final wasn’t ours, but this experience has laid a strong foundation for the future.
The success was hailed as a landmark moment for the sport in India. Rahul Bose, President of the Indian Rugby Football Union, described the performance as a testament to the continuous progress and confidence of Indian men’s rugby.
The team’s development has been partly credited to the new GMR Rugby Premier League, which has provided players with high-level competition. This achievement places India’s men’s team alongside elite Asian nations like Hong Kong China, Japan, and China.
With both the men’s and women’s teams now in Asia Rugby’s premier divisions, the tournament in Muscat marks a historic milestone for Indian rugby.
