Real Madrid to Seek Damages After Court Rejects UEFA's Super League Appeal

MADRID, 30 October (H.S.): A court in Madrid dismissed an appeal by The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) related to the Super League on Wednesday, prompting Real Madrid to announce its intention to seek substantial compensation. The legal battle stems from the 2021 proposal by twelve of Europe’s top clubs, including Real Madrid and Barcelona, to form a breakaway Super League.

The project quickly collapsed following intense backlash from fans, particularly those of English clubs, and threats of sanctions from both UEFA and FIFA.In a landmark decision in December 2023, the European Court of Justice ruled that the ban imposed on the Super League was contrary to European law.

A Spanish judge later affirmed this, stating that UEFA and FIFA had abused their dominant position and hindered free competition by opposing the project. The latest ruling from the Madrid court rejects the appeals filed by UEFA, as well as by La Liga and the Spanish Football Federation.

However, the scope of this decision is considered limited, as the relevant regulations have been significantly altered since the initial legal action.Real Madrid welcomed the court’s decision in an official statement. This ruling confirms that UEFA seriously violated the European Union’s free competition rules in the Super League case, the club stated.

Real Madrid added that it will continue to work in the interests of world football and its fans, while also seeking substantial damages from UEFA.
