‘NMC decision based on assessment report, students’ careers safe’: Sat Sharma on withdrawal of LoP for SMVD Institute of Medical Excellence

Jammu, Jan 07 (KINS): Jammu and Kashmir BJP President and Rajya Sabha MP Sat Sharma on Wednesday clarified the party’s stand on the withdrawal of the Letter of Permission (LoP) granted to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence for starting the MBBS course with an intake of 50 seats for the academic session 2025–26, stating that the National Medical Commission (NMC) acted strictly in accordance with the law and laid-down norms.

Addressing a press conference at the BJP headquarters in Jammu, as per news agency Kashmir Indpeth News Service (KINS), Sat Sharma said that in recent days several political parties have attempted to politicize this matter, creating confusion among the public.

He explained that the NMC Act, 2019 clearly empowers the commission to periodically assess medical institutions and take action wherever standards are not met.

He said the medical college in question was assessed by a duly constituted team under the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB), which pointed out serious irregularities and deficiencies in infrastructure, faculty, and teaching standards. “The decision was not targeted at any religion or region, but was purely based on the assessment report and provisions of the NMC Act,” he asserted.

Sat Sharma highlighted that the law of the NMC allows withdrawal of recognition if an institution fails to meet required standards even after sufficient time has been given for compliance.

The BJP President expressed gratitude to BJP National President and Union Minister J.P. Nadda for his intervention to safeguard the future of students.

“The BJP has always stood for quality, transparency and accountability in education. We will not compromise on standards, but at the same time, we are fully committed to ensuring that students are not made to suffer because of institutional failures,” Sat Sharma said.

He also dismissed allegations of religious or political bias, reiterating that the BJP has never supported discrimination of any kind and that the issue is solely about maintaining quality in medical education.(KINS)
