Dhaka, May 11 (H.S.): The interim government of Bangladesh has made a significant political decision, announcing a ban on the Awami League party of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. This ban has been imposed under the Anti-Terrorism Act. Additionally, the government has decided to amend the International Crimes (Tribunal) Act to initiate an investigation and prosecution process regarding the party’s alleged role in repressing the student-led public uprising.

This announcement was made following an emergency meeting chaired by the chief advisor of the interim government, Mohammad Yunus, on Saturday night. In a press conference after the meeting, legal advisor Asif Najrul provided information about the government’s three main decisions. He stated that official notification of these decisions would be issued on the next working day.

The government has clarified that all activities of the Awami League, including operations on online and digital platforms, will remain completely banned until a judicial decision is reached. This step has been taken from the perspective of national security, sovereignty, the safety of activists involved in the July uprising, and the protection of witnesses and complainants for the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT).

Additionally, the final version of the July Declaration will be published within the next 30 working days, which will include documents and allegations related to the student movement.

The government stated that the aim of the ban is to maintain political stability in the country and to ensure a conducive environment for the upcoming general elections. In recent weeks, the administration has been vigilant regarding protests and alleged violent activities conducted by the Awami League across the country.

However, there has been no official response from the Awami League or Sheikh Hasina to this ban so far.

This ban has been imposed at a time when preparations for the upcoming parliamentary elections in the country have begun and opposition parties have been increasing pressure for fair elections.
