

Guwahati, 8 May (HS): On the occasion of World Red Cross Day, Assam State Red Cross Society President and Governor Laxman Prasad Acharya on Thursday unveiled three statues in memory of Jean Henry Dunant, Dr. Paul Chandra Duvara and Renuka Devi Barkatki at the Society premises in Guwahati.
On this occasion, Governor Acharya said that unveiling the statues of these great personalities is like paying homage to the symbols of human service and selfless dedication. He said, The unveiling of these statues is a tribute to the souls who gave new meaning to the service of humanity.
Underlining the immortal legacy of the three great men, the Governor said that their contribution is beyond the limits of time and inspires the volunteers of the Red Cross even today. He described the Red Cross as not just an institution but a living example of compassion and courage.
The Governor appreciated the selfless services of the Assam State Branch and its commitment to public welfare. He said, Humanity is not just an idea, but a feeling. When someone serves others motivated by compassion after seeing their suffering, that is true humanity.
Citing great spiritual leaders like Gautam Buddha, Lord Mahavira and Swami Vivekananda, he said that service and compassion have always been important in the Indian tradition.
It is noteworthy that Jean Henry Dunant was the founder of the Red Cross movement, who inspired people to serve humanity through compassion. Dr. Paul Chandra Duvara dedicated his life to human service by establishing the Guwahati Red Cross Hospital. Renuka Devi Barkatki played an important role in bringing the Assam State Branch to its present status.
On this occasion, many dignitaries including Assam State Branch President AK Absar Hazarika, former Vice President and social worker Padmashree Ajay Dutta were present.
