May's stock market shows potential for strength based on historical performance

New Delhi, May 3 (HS): The domestic stock market has faced ongoing fluctuations due to global economic uncertainty, fears of a U.S. recession, and geopolitical tensions affecting markets worldwide. Amidst this volatility, the Indian stock market has shown potential for improvement in May, based on historical trends from the past decade.

The Nifty of the National Stock Exchange has closed positively in May six times over the last 10 years, with an average return of 1.5% and a median return of 1.9%.

Additionally, the Nifty Midcap Index also performed well, closing in the green six times, with an average return of 0.4% and a median return of 1.2%. Sector-wise, the FMCG and automobile sectors excelled, with the Nifty Automobile Index registering positive performance 8 out of the last 10 years, generating an average return of 3.9% and a median return of 4.9%.

Similarly, the FMCG Index also finished strong 8 times, yielding an average return of 3% and a median return of 2.6%. Furthermore, the banking and financial sectors remained robust, showing strength seven times, with an average return of 2.5% during the decade.
