London, 24 October (H.S.): Three Metropolitan Police officers were dismissed with immediate effect on Thursday after an undercover BBC Panorama investigation exposed them making abhorrent racist and misogynistic comments . Sergeant Joe McIlvenny and Police Constables Philip Neilson and Martin Borg were sacked for gross misconduct following expedited hearing.
The officers were secretly filmed by a reporter at Charing Cross police station. The footage revealed:Sgt. McIlvenny was recorded being dismissive of a pregnant woman’s rape and domestic violence allegations and making graphic, misogynistic comments in the workplace.
PC Neilson referred to an invasion of scum from the Middle East, made offensive remarks about people from Algeria and Somalia, and suggested a visa overstayer should have a bullet through his head.
PC Borg was filmed revelling in the use of force on detainees and making discriminatory remarks about Muslims.During the hearings, the officers admitted making the comments but denied gross misconduct, claiming the undercover reporter had groomed or egged them on.
However, the chair of the panel, Commander Jason Prins, described their conduct as a disgrace and ruled that it caused significant harm to the reputation of the police .The Metropolitan Police confirmed the officers will be added to a barred list, preventing them from future employment in policing.
Commander Simon Messinger stated that the force had replaced the custody team at Charing Cross and made changes to local leadership. The three officers are the first of ten current or former officers to face accelerated misconduct proceedings resulting from the Panorama investigation.
