Netanyahu Anticipates Hostage Release in Gaza as Indirect Ceasefire Talks Loom

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu

Jerusalem, October 5(HS): Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed hope on Saturday that the release of hostages held by Hamas in Gaza would be announced in the coming days, amid cautious optimism surrounding imminent indirect ceasefire negotiations in Egypt.

Netanyahu reaffirmed that Hamas would be disarmed and Gaza demilitarised either the easy way or the hard way, signaling ongoing resolve despite emerging diplomatic efforts.Hamas has agreed, under a U.S.-proposed 20-point peace plan, to free all Israeli hostages—both living and deceased—and to allow technocratic governance in Gaza.

However, the militant group notably omitted acceptance of disarmament, a core Israeli demand, raising questions about the durability of any agreement. The plan also calls for reciprocal releases of hundreds of detainees and an immediate ceasefire.

U.S. President Donald Trump has intensified pressure on Hamas to expedite the deal, warning against delays and highlighting Israel’s concession on troop withdrawal lines. The Israeli military confirmed it is preparing to implement the first phase of the hostage release plan, emphasizing troop safety as paramount.

Despite tentative hopes among hostage families and some Gazans, scepticism remains strong both locally and internationally. Many fear a potential trap aimed at enabling Israel to reclaim hostages only to resume hostilities. Netanyahu faces internal political pressure from ultranationalists opposed to any compromise short of Hamas’ total defeat, although public opinion polls indicate significant Israeli support for a deal.

Over the past two years, Gaza has endured massive destruction and displacement, with Israeli strikes continuing even as peace talks approach. The conflict’s human toll remains staggering, with over 67,000 reported killed in Gaza since the war began.

As diplomatic efforts advance, the fragile situation on the ground underscores the complex challenges ahead for peace and reconciliation.
