Oslo, October 10(HS): The Norwegian Nobel Committee is set to announce the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize winner today at 11 am local time (09:00 GMT) at the Norwegian Nobel Institute in Oslo amid intense global scrutiny surrounding US President Donald Trump’s high-profile lobbying for the award.
Trump, back in office since January 2025, has claimed credit for brokering peace in seven conflicts and recently a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, pushing for the accolade as the Peace President. His aggressive campaign, amplified by his son Eric Trump and the White House on social media, has made the selection process a focal point of international political debate.
The Nobel Committee, composed of five members appointed by Norway’s parliament with diverse political backgrounds, includes chair Jorgen Watne Frydnes, known for his human rights advocacy, and other members like Asle Toje, Anne Enger, Kristin Clemet, and Gry Larsen, each bringing distinct political and professional perspectives to the panel.
Despite external pressures, the committee operates independently and aims for a consensus decision based on Alfred Nobel’s original criteria: achievements in fraternity between nations, disarmament, and peace promotion.
The committee had finalized its decision on October 6, before the recent Israel-Gaza peace deal brokered by Trump, which means such developments would only be considered for next year’s award. Norway faces a delicate diplomatic situation as it negotiates trade deals with the US and manages its $2 trillion sovereign wealth fund, partially invested in American assets, while contending with Trump’s vocal campaign and public lobbying.
Trump’s claims have been controversial, with supporters such as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly endorsing his nomination, while some committee members and observers remain skeptical, emphasizing the prize’s focus on sustained and verifiable peace achievements rather than political spectacle.Other shortlisted contenders this year include humanitarian groups active in conflict zones and advocates for press freedom.
As the world awaits the announcement at the Norwegian Nobel Institute in Oslo, the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize decision underscores the enduring challenge of balancing global peace aspirations with the complex realities of international politics.
