Restoring the dignity and supremacy of the House is my priority – Vijendra Gupta

Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijendra Gupta

New Delhi, April 25 (H.S.): Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijendra Gupta has asserted that his primary goal is to restore the parliamentary traditions that were compromised during the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government’s tenure.

In an interview with Hindustan Samachar, he remarked on the necessity for those in power to recognize the impermanence of democratic authority. Gupta highlighted that for the past 11 years, there had been persistent violations of Assembly rules and traditions, such as arbitrary summoning of sessions without formal adjournments and discussions on irrelevant topics, which distracted from crucial issues affecting residents. He expressed disdain for the trend of political speeches overshadowing essential legislative discussions.

Addressing his role as an activist, Gupta committed to ensuring that Assembly proceedings uphold the institution’s dignity and foster substantial debate that meets public expectations. He dismissed claims that AAP members were barred from participating, emphasizing that the Assembly would no longer tolerate undisciplined political behavior.

Gupta reiterated his dedication to restoring the House’s dignity by strictly following parliamentary rules, preventing it from becoming a platform for trivial debates. His focus will be on creating laws that genuinely address public concerns through meaningful discussions, holding members accountable to the voters’ trust and expectations.
