Ahmedabad,October 5(HS): Shubman Gill expressed immense pride and ambition upon being named India’s new ODI captain, setting his sights firmly on winning the 2027 World Cup. Announced by chief selector Ajit Agarkar ahead of India’s limited-overs tour of Australia, Gill replaces Rohit Sharma in the leadership role but acknowledged the continuing presence of Rohit and Virat Kohli in the squad.

In his first public remarks as captain on bcci.tv, Gill described the role as “the biggest honour” and vowed to uphold India’s status as a formidable ODI side. “We have about 20 ODIs before the World Cup, and everything we play will prepare us to compete at our best. Hopefully, we will be fully ready and win that World Cup in South Africa,” he stated, referencing the 2027 tournament to be held across South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.

Gill also paid heartfelt tribute to Ahmedabad, highlighting its significance as the city where he recently led India to a Test victory against the West Indies and where he was earlier informed of his appointment as Test captain. The Gujarat Titans captain expressed deep emotional ties to the venue, underscoring the special role Ahmedabad plays in his leadership journey.

Gill’s appointment signals a new chapter for Indian cricket as he takes on the responsibility of building a winning legacy in the ODI format, driven by the ultimate goal of World Cup success.
