New Delhi, October 4(HS): The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has appointed Shubman Gill as the new captain of the Indian One Day International (ODI) cricket team, replacing Rohit Sharma. Gill, who is already the regular Test captain and deputy captain in T20Is, will lead the team in the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia starting October 19, 2025.This leadership change marks the beginning of a new era in Indian cricket, with the 26-year-old batting prodigy entrusted with the captaincy responsibilities across formats.
Under Gill’s captaincy, India had drawn the recent Test series in England 2-2, where he was the highest run-scorer with 754 runs at an impressive average of 75.40.Rohit Sharma, who had been the full-time ODI captain since December 2021, led India in 56 ODIs securing 42 wins, 12 losses, one tie, and one no-result.
His tenure included leading India to victory in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and the 2023 Asia Cup, along with reaching the finals of the 2023 ODI World Cup. Rohit will continue to be part of the team as a batsman during the Australia series.
Another significant highlight for the series is the return of veteran cricketers Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to the Indian ODI squad after a hiatus following their retirement from Test and T20 internationals earlier in the year. They will be playing together for the first time since March 2025, post the Champions Trophy.
The squad for the Australia tour includes notable absentees such as Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja, Rishabh Pant, and Hardik Pandya due to rest or injuries. Bumrah has been rested after a consistent run of performances, while Pant and Pandya are nursing injuries.
For the T20 format, Suryakumar Yadav will continue as captain with Shubman Gill as vice-captain. The T20 team features the return of Jasprit Bumrah and newcomer Nitish Kumar Reddy among the players who represented India in the Asia Cup.
India’s ODI matches against Australia are scheduled on October 19, 23, and 25, followed by a five-match T20 series from October 29 to November 8.
