Soldier Killed, Two Militants Neutralised in Waziristan Ambush

Islamabad, August 11 (HS): One Pakistani soldier was killed and five others wounded when militants ambushed a military contingent in Waziristan, prompting retaliatory fire that left two assailants dead, security sources told Dawn on Sunday.

The incident occurred as troops were moving from Shawal Marrah in North Waziristan towards Sirnarai in Upper South Waziristan. Insurgents lying in wait opened fire, triggering an intense exchange. The fallen soldier was identified as Naveed, while Naik Amjad and soldiers Abu Bakar, Siyam, Nasir, and Shaukat sustained injuries.

The wounded were evacuated to a military medical facility in Razmak for treatment. The Pakistan Army’s media wing, Inter‑Services Public Relations (ISPR), has yet to issue an official statement.

According to officials, clearance operations remain underway in the restive region as security forces press ahead with efforts to dismantle militant infrastructure. The attack underscores the persistent insurgent threat in Waziristan, a long‑troubled frontier zone along the Afghan border.
