Singapore, 3 May (H.S.): Voting for Singapore’s General Election 2025 (GE2025) commenced at 8 am (local time) on Saturday across 1,240 polling stations, with polls closing at 8 pm and results anticipated late that night. Approximately 2,758,846 registered voters are participating to select the next government amidst challenging global trade dynamics, particularly influenced by tariffs from the United States, the city-state’s primary trading partner. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong seeks a fresh mandate for the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP), which has governed Singapore since its independence and played a pivotal role in transforming it into a global financial hub.
Amidst concerns over the US-China trade war, Singapore’s diplomatic and economic ties with both superpowers remain critical, as any downturn could adversely impact its growth. Multinational corporations are closely observing the election, given Singapore’s strategic position in Asian markets.
In total, 92 out of 97 parliamentary seats are contested, with 211 candidates from multiple political parties vying for votes. Key issues include the cost of living, housing, and the influx of foreign workers. As of June 2024, Singapore’s population reached approximately 6.04 million, reflecting a 2 percent increase, mainly from the non-resident demographic.
On nomination day on April 23, PAP secured five seats uncontested in Marine Parade-Braddell Heights Group Representation Constituency (GRC). Voting extends to over 18,000 Singaporeans abroad at missions globally. Eleven political parties and two independents are contending across 32 constituencies, with PAP contesting all seats, while the opposition Workers’ Party is fielding candidates in 26. Other parties include the Progress Singapore Party, Singapore People’s Party, and others.
