Liverpool Leap as Arsenal Deny City in Stoppage-Stime Siege

Gabriel Martinelli

London, September 22(HS):

Gabriel Martinelli’s 93rd-minute strike salvaged a dramatic 1-1 draw for Arsenal against Manchester City at the Emirates, denying Pep Guardiola’s side a crucial away win and leaving Liverpool as the weekend’s biggest beneficiaries in the title race.

Guardiola, typically known for his possession-heavy tactics, surprised many by shifting to an ultra-defensive 5-5-0 formation after withdrawing star striker Erling Haaland late in the game. This tactical gamble—largely seen as a response to squad fatigue following a demanding week—saw City sit deep, cede control of the ball, and rely on an organized defensive block.

Despite this, City could not hold on as Martinelli, latching onto a ball over the top, calmly chipped over goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to secure a point for the Gunners.

The shared points in North London handed Liverpool an early advantage. The Reds, defending champions, now stand five points clear at the summit after a perfect start to the season. Meanwhile, City’s stuttering form—just seven points from five matches, their worst tally in nearly two decades—has left them with a significant gap to close.

The result also marked a personal milestone for Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, who became the first coach to avoid defeat against Guardiola in five consecutive Premier League meetings. However, both Arsenal and City will rue missed opportunities to claim maximum points in a cagey contest that highlighted the heightened stakes at the top of the table.

Guardiola admitted his side was stretched by a congested fixture list, with only two days’ rest between the Champions League win over Napoli and this grueling London trip. He conceded his gameplan was shaped by necessity, not preference, stating: “I would prefer not to do it, but at this level, sometimes you have to adjust.” For large stretches, the strategy worked, as Arsenal struggled to break through City’s deep-lying lines—until one decisive moment exposed the risk in stepping up just a fraction too late.
