London,23 September (H.S.): Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, has been dropped as a patron and ambassador by at least seven prominent charities following the emergence of a 2011 email in which she called convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein her supreme friend. The correspondence, which appears to contradict her public disavowal of Epstein, has led to a swift and damaging fallout for the duchess’s philanthropic profile.
Organizations including the Teenage Cancer Trust, where she served as a patron for 35 years, the British Heart Foundation, and the Natasha Allergy Research Foundation have all severed their connections with her. Julia’s House, a children’s hospice, was the first to act, stating it was inappropriate for her to continue in the role.
The controversy centers on an email, published by the Mail on Sunday and The Sun, sent by the duchess to Epstein just weeks after she had publicly denounced him. In the message, she seemed to apologize for her public criticism, writing, You have always been a steadfast, generous and supreme friend to me and my family. This private sentiment was at odds with her public statement at the time, in which she called her involvement with Epstein, which included borrowing money, a gigantic error of judgement.
A spokesperson for the duchess claimed the email was sent under duress to counter a defamation lawsuit threatened by Epstein and that she maintains her regret over the association. However, the revelation has been deeply embarrassing, tarnishing her brand and raising new questions about the extent of her contact with Epstein after his 2008 conviction for sex offenses.
The scandal echoes the turmoil faced by her former husband, Prince Andrew, who was forced to step back from royal duties and lost his own patronages due to his friendship with Epstein. This latest development is a significant blow to the duchess, whose public life has been largely defined by her charity work, and it is likely to complicate any future role within the royal sphere.
