
New Delhi, September 25 (HS): Indian equity markets continued their losing streak for the fifth consecutive trading session on Thursday, weighed down by elevated crude oil prices, weak global cues, and persistent foreign fund outflows. Despite staging a brief early rebound, both the Sensex and Nifty succumbed to heavy selling pressure through the day and closed sharply lower.The BSE Sensex fell 555.95 points, or 0.68 percent, to settle at 81,159.68, while the NSE Nifty lost 166.05 points, or 0.66 percent, to close at 24,890.85. Investors were left poorer by nearly ₹3.24 lakh crore in a single session as the overall market capitalisation of BSE-listed firms slipped to ₹457.32 lakh crore from the previous day’s ₹460.56 lakh crore.
Heavy selling was witnessed in realty, IT, and pharmaceutical stocks, while energy, auto, FMCG, banking, capital goods, consumer durables, oil & gas, PSU, and technology indices also ended in the red. In contrast, buying interest was visible in defence and metal counters.The broader markets mirrored the weak sentiment with the BSE Midcap index declining 0.72 percent and the Smallcap index falling 0.75 percent.
On the BSE, 4,319 stocks were actively traded, with 1,474 advancing, 2,703 declining, and 142 remaining unchanged. At the NSE, out of 2,770 traded shares, 802 ended higher, 1,968 lower. Among the Sensex constituents, only three stocks closed in positive territory while 27 posted losses. On the Nifty, 12 counters ended higher and 38 slipped lower.
During the DayThe Sensex opened weak at 81,574.31 but bounced back quickly, rising over 125 points to touch 81,840.73 within minutes of trade. However, persistent selling dragged it down nearly 750 points to an intraday low of 81,092.89 before recovering slightly in the final minutes. The Nifty followed a similar trend, opening at 25,034.50, climbing to 25,092.70, and then slipping nearly 215 points to a low of 24,878.30.
A late recovery trimmed some losses, but the index still closed deep in the red at 24,890.85.Top Gainers and LosersAmong the key gainers on the Nifty were Bharat Electronics (up 1.95 percent), Hero MotoCorp (1.47 percent), Axis Bank (0.66 percent), Hindalco Industries (0.62 percent), and ONGC (0.48 percent).
The top losers included Trent Ltd (down 3.15 percent), Power Grid Corporation (3.03 percent), Tata Motors (2.73 percent), Tata Consultancy Services (2.57 percent), and Asian Paints (2.17 percent).
