
London, 24 October (H.S.):The acclaimed British rapper Ghetts has been charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving following a fatal hit-and-run incident in north-east London. The musician, whose real name is Justin Clarke-Samuel, is accused of failing to stop after his vehicle struck a 20-year-old man in Ilford on Saturday, October 18 .
The 41-year-old artist from Woodford Green appeared at Stratford Magistrates’ Court on Monday, October 20, the same day the victim succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.
Due to the victim’s death, the indictment is expected to be elevated to causing death by dangerous driving at the next hearing. Clarke-Samuel was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear at Barkingside Magistrates’ Court on Monday, October 27.
Ghetts is a prominent figure in the UK grime scene, known for his Mercury Prize-nominated work and collaborations with major artists like Ed Sheeran and Stormzy. His career accolades include winning Best Male Act at the MOBO Awards in 2021 and receiving the MOBO Pioneer Award in 2024 for his contributions to British black culture. He also recently appeared in the Netflix series Supacell. Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses to the collision to come forward.
